Vacancy for General Secretary

After seven years in the role and many years before that on the Executive Committee, Dahlia Harrison as decided to retire from the post of General Secretary at this year’s AGM in October. This means that your Society is looking for a new General Secretary.

Please take a moment to consider if you would be willing to undertake this important role.

The Role

  • To act as the Society’s first point of contact with members and non-members
  • To ensure the smooth running and functioning of the Executive Committee meetings and the AGM, including:
    • Collating and circulating the agenda
    • Recording the minutes
  • To act as custodian of the Society’s constitution and ensure that activities are in line with the Society’s objectives
  • To assist the President with the administration of the Society’s honours and awards
  • To be a signatory on the Society’s bank account
  • To liaise with the President and other Officers of the Society
  • To liaise between the Society and the office of the Patron

It is important to stress that you will be supported by the President, other Officers and members of the Executive Committee.

Other Duties

These are not strictly within the remit of General Secretary but are performed by the current office holder. They could be passed on to other volunteers in future:

  • Liaison between the Executive Committee and the Annual Convention organisers.
  • Stewardship of the Society’s archives
  • Liaison with Branch Secretaries

Qualities Required

  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to travel to attend Society meetings held at the National Archives, Kew (expenses will be reimbursed). There are six meetings a year
  • Energy and drive to take the Society forwards

The position is unpaid, but expenses will be reimbursed.
